James Berry Poetry Prize
Deadline July 31 (must be received by this date), formerly July 1. Recommended free contest from the Newcastle Centre for Literary Arts awards three UK emerging poets of color with advances of 1,000 pounds apiece, writing mentorships, and publication by Bloodaxe Books for a portfolio of 10-12 pages of poetry. Applicants must be 18+, not yet have published a full-length book collection of their own poetry, not be under contract with a publisher or agent for publication of a book-length poetry collection, and not have received extensive support from similar mentorships. Sponsor notes that "special consideration will be given to LGBTQ+/disabled poets and poets from underrepresented backgrounds". Enter by email. Be sure to submit all required application materials. Named in honor of the late James Berry, an influential Black poet in Britain, the prize is meant to "counteract the underrepresentation of British poets of color in UK publishing".
