I’d Like to Donate It to the Library
Please prepare your celebrations
because I've come to make a large donation.
I know how trying times have been
'cause they've cut the budget yet again
though you deserve greater allocation.
I'd like to make a gift to you
of this folk art made in '72
with arrowheads carefully pasted
in the shape of a squirrel by my wasted
late Great Uncle Stu. (Yes, he did a lot of shrooms.)
And here is this computer guide
kept by my father 'til he died.
Though it may be a little out-of-date,
for someone curious, it would be great,
to learn about technology in 1995.
What a treasure! Take a peek
at this photo; it's an antique.
I bet you've never heard the story
of how my husband's grandma Lori
founded our defunct local curling league.
See this here preserved piece of toast
which resembles Agatha Christie's ghost.
And check out this blood-spattered shirt
worn by my brawny grandpa Curt
the day he broke Hemingway's nose.
Take this box of buttons, this orthodontic cast,
this stack of yearbooks from years gone past.
An assortment of original fan-fiction,
and my Garfield comic strip collection.
These old jam jars, these baseball gloves,
this rooster art, these pencil stubs.
My fifth grade toothpick roller coaster,
my mother's framed Anne Geddes posters.
I'm sure it's not everyday you see
a patron as generous as me.
But really it's the least that I could do
to show my support and gratitude
by donating to the library.
