Daniel Victor Wins the $10,000 Grand Prize in Our Ninth Annual North Street Book Prize Competition
Winning Writers is pleased to announce the results from its ninth annual North Street Book Prize competition. Daniel Victor of New York, New York won the Grand Prize and $10,000 for his literary novel The Evil Inclination. These category winners received $1,000 each:
- Michael Bracey of Maywood, Illinois, and Ruth Goring of Chicago, Illinois won First Prize in Art Book for Caras Lindas de Colombia/Beautiful Faces of Colombia, a bilingual book of photojournalism celebrating Colombia's African-descendant communities.
- Steve Wolfson of Regina, Saskatchewan won First Prize in Children's Picture Book for Aunty Jane Knits Up a Storm, a dynamic and effective tale about how a community supports one of its beloved elders when she is widowed.
- Karen Glinski of Albuquerque, New Mexico won First Prize in Middle Grade for Badge of Honor, a lively and well-researched adventure story in which a tween boy and his plucky dachshund rescue Navajo cultural treasures from a gang of thieves.
- Dmitri Jackson of Ballwin, Missouri won First Prize in Graphic Novel & Memoir for Blackwax Boulevard Is Listening, the second installment of his comic strip about the staff of an urban record store who contend with unrequited love, addiction, and fallen idols in a compelling storyline inspired by the #MeToo movement. This is Jackson's second win in this category.
- Irene Cooper of Bend, Oregon won First Prize in Genre Fiction for Found, a psychological thriller about a grieving mother with a preternatural ability to help the police find missing children.
- Lucy May Lennox of Seattle, Washington won First Prize in Mainstream/Literary Fiction for Flowers by Night, an immersive historical novel that explores cultural mores around class and gender in early 19th-century Japan through the same-sex love story of a low-ranking samurai and a blind masseur.
- Mark S. Robinson of Ridgefield, Connecticut won First Prize in Creative Nonfiction & Memoir for Black on Madison Avenue, a compendium of high points and anti-discrimination battles from the 40-year career of a trailblazing Black advertising executive.
- Geof Hewitt of Calais, Vermont won First Prize in Poetry for Only What's Imagined, a meditative collection rooted in the rugged landscape and working-class culture of Vermont.
In addition to cash prizes, the top nine authors received a marketing analysis and one-hour phone consultation with Carolyn Howard-Johnson, a $300 credit at BookBaby, three months of Plus service from Book Award Pro (a $207 value), and free advertising in the Winning Writers newsletter. Diane Chiddister Wins the $8,000 Grand Prize in Our Eighth Annual North Street Book Prize Competition
Winning Writers is pleased to announce the results from its eighth annual North Street Book Prize competition. Diane Chiddister of Yellow Springs, Ohio won the Grand Prize and $8,000 for her literary novel One More Day. These category winners received $1,000 each:
- Tonia Shimin of Goleta, California won First Prize in Art Book for The Art of Symeon Shimin, a full-color retrospective of her father's paintings and commercial artwork whose highlights include the mural "Contemporary Justice and the Child" for the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building in Washington, DC.
- Kayla Marie Pierre of Brooklyn, New York won First Prize in Children's Picture Book for Happy Harper: Grandpa Comes Home, an uplifting story about a biracial girl in Brooklyn whose Grandpa is about to move there from Haiti.
- Robert Chazz Chute of London, Ontario won First Prize in Genre Fiction for Endemic, a post-apocalyptic plague novel with a neurodivergent female book editor as an unlikely action hero.
- Alicia Czechowski of Baltimore, Maryland won First Prize in Graphic Novel & Memoir for Paisley Invasion, a quirky coloring book with a wordless narrative about mysterious visitors from space.
- Wendy Sibbison of Greenfield, Massachusetts won First Prize in Mainstream/Literary Fiction for Helen in Trouble, the story of a sheltered high school girl in Virginia in 1963 who discovers her inner resources when she must procure an illegal abortion.
- Lorelei Kay of Hesperia, California won First Prize in Creative Nonfiction & Memoir for From Mormon to Mermaid, an account of her feminist awakening that led her to leave the Mormon Church.
- Gayle Lauradunn of Albuquerque, New Mexico won First Prize in Poetry for All the Wild and Holy, a book-length poem from the perspective of a woman in Deerfield, Massachusetts who was kidnapped in a raid by French-Canadian and Mohawk warriors in 1704 but refused to be ransomed by her Puritan family. She later married into a Mohawk tribe.

C. Vargas McPherson Wins the $5,000 Grand Prize in Our Seventh Annual North Street Book Prize Competition for Self-Published Books

Vargas McPherson of Portland, Oregon won the Grand Prize and $5,000 for her memoir Inheriting Our Names: An Imagined True Memoir of Spain's Pact of Forgetting. - Nicole Kohr of New Bern, North Carolina won First Prize in Children's Picture Book for My Pants, a funny and heartwarming story about an autistic little girl with a special interest in fashion.
- Ryan Poirier of Bowmanville, Ontario won First Prize in Graphic Novel & Memoir for The Herd, a superhero spoof set in a city of humanoid animals where a mishap at the fruit juice factory has given our not-too-bright protagonists some special powers.
- Jan Regan of Geneva, New York won First Prize in Art Book for #porchportraits, a sensitive photo essay about families in her hometown during the first months of COVID lockdown and the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020.
- Leslie Sussan of Silver Spring, Maryland won First Prize in Creative Nonfiction & Memoir for Choosing Life: My Father's Journey in Film from Hollywood to Hiroshima. Sussan's memoir chronicles the late Herbert Sussan's life-altering experiences as a Defense Department cinematographer filming the aftermath of the atomic bomb, and his daughter's pilgrimage to Hiroshima in 1987-88 to complete the exposé he was never allowed to share.
- Delores Lowe Friedman of Bayside, New York and Ian Strasfogel of New York, New York each received a First Prize in Mainstream/Literary Fiction. Friedman's multi-layered, intimate novel Wildflowers follows a decades-long friendship among three Black women in New York City. Strasfogel's novel Operaland is a comical romp about a middle-aged Midwestern car salesman who becomes a world-class Wagnerian tenor.
- Tim Stickel of Mercer Island, Washington won First Prize in Genre Fiction for Special District: Harbin, a historical mystery that follows a young half-Korean, half-Russian policeman in 1929 China as he investigates his first major homicide case.
- Thomas Sheehan of Saugus, Massachusetts won First Prize in Poetry for The Saugus Book, a mature collection of narrative poetry about the Korean War and working-class life in the Northeast.

Alicia Doyle of Ventura, California won First Prize in Creative Nonfiction & Memoir for Fighting Chance, a journalist's memoir of her unexpected and psychologically transformative career as an amateur boxing champ. Rachael A.Z. Mutabingwa of Kampala, Uganda won First Prize in Genre Fiction for Kunda, an ambitious, spiritually uplifting tale of time travel and family destiny in a fictitious African island nation. Jolie P. Hoang of Fonthill, Ontario won First Prize in Mainstream/Literary Fiction for Anchorless, an autobiographical novella about her Vietnamese refugee family, told in the voice of her father's ghost, who describes how he drowned while escaping their war-torn country.

- Carol DeMent of Tumwater, Washington won First Prize in Genre Fiction for Saving Nary, a wrenching yet ultimately inspirational historical novel about refugees from the 1970s Cambodian genocide who are resettled in small-town Oregon.
- Francesco Granieri of Northfield, New Jersey won First Prize in Creative Nonfiction for Pavarotti and Pancakes, his memoir of growing up with a mother who slid into psychosis because of sexual abuse in her childhood.
- W.R. Rodriguez of Madison, Wisconsin won First Prize in Poetry for his collection From the Banks of Brook Avenue, a soot-stained love letter to New York City's multi-layered immigrant history.

Winning Writers is pleased to announce the results from its third annual North Street Book Prize competition for self-published books. Paul Thornton of Fort Myers, Florida won first prize in Creative Nonfiction & Memoir for White Man's Disease, a gripping and inspiring memoir by an African-American businessman who was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 29. Alesa Lightbourne of Santa Cruz, California won first prize in General Fiction for The Kurdish Bike, a richly textured and insightful autobiographical novel about an American teacher at an international school in Kurdish Iraq. Nicole Evelina of Maryland Heights, Missouri won first prize in Young Adult Fiction for Daughter of Destiny, a spiritual and feminist fantasy novel retelling the legend of King Arthur from Queen Guinevere's point of view. They each won $1,500 plus services and benefits from Carolyn Howard-Johnson, author of The Frugal Book Promoter, and BookBaby. $6,250 was awarded in all. We received 378 entries.
