A Villanelle of Love and Sorrow
Do you know who you are, my Sea Monkey friend?
Beyond your glass wall can you perceive
my love, my life, my rainbow's end?
Don't be afraid as your mind comprehends
my fulfillment in that one whom I'll never leave.
Do you know who? You are. My Sea Monkey friend
you hatched in a world where I cannot descend.
How I long to embrace you! Yet you will not receive
my love. My life, my rainbow's end
mean nothing to you. I cannot contend
as mere breath separates you, Adam, from me, Eve.
Do you know who you are? My Sea Monkey. Friend,
it is you, a scant inch of life, that offends,
oblivious in your brine, making my soul grieve
my love, my life. My rainbow's end,
you wear not a royal crown. Do you only pretend
and thus protect your own heart as you deceive?
Do you?! Know who you are: my Sea Monkey, friend,
my love, my life. My rainbow's end.
