Candace Jaffe is a recent graduate of Lesley University's MFA Program in Nonfiction. She has been coaching and mentoring young athletes in track and field and cross country running for eighteen years. Through sport, she is inspired to write about the camaraderie, emotion, and personal achievement that competition has to offer. "The Weight of Silver" is the final essay in her thesis collection entitled Closest to First, a body of work that highlights the value, meaning, and interpretations of second place. In an effort to balance her passion for coaching with her desire to write, she also facilitates a creative writing club at her local high school in York, Maine.
