I began my life as a photographer with a Kodak Instamatic 104. It was 1966, and I was captivated.
Years later, when it came time to apply to college, I wrote a letter to the editor of National Geographic, asking if I should go to a school that offered technical degrees in photography (though they were quite rare at the time), or study at a good liberal arts college. That editor advised that, while I could always learn the technicalities of the camera, my photographs would be informed by the totality of what great books I had read, what experiences I had lived through and what perspectives on the world I would develop over time. My vision as a photographer, he wrote, would come from the culmination of these things, and the technical aspects would be gained over time. With that, I found myself at Colgate University, graduating with a degree in art and English. My photography continued throughout, on personal assignments, and with student and local newspapers and the college yearbook.
Since that time, I have worked almost exclusively as a photographer, first as "Writer/Photographer" at a small liberal arts college, and soon after from my own studio. My clients include subjects from all walks of life, and many organizations and businesses, large and small. I have traveled the world with my camera, most recently and joyfully with tremendous colleagues as Tour Photographer for the Philadelphia Orchestra, photographing musical performances and residencies throughout Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Mongolia.
I am most drawn, always, to people photography. I love to tell the story of the times, the product, the event, or the place through the people that inhabit those spaces.
My home is Geneva, NY, a small city in the Finger Lakes, where I have been deeply involved in community life, including current service on City Council. With my husband of forty years, I have raised two boys, now men, and owned the best dog in the world.
