Born in Yokohama, Japan, Karen grew up the eldest of six children in a military family. She majored in Anthropology at the University of New Mexico where she formed a lifelong love for many different world cultures and a special interest in the Native American cultures of the Southwest. Her middle grade fiction series presents numerous "coming of age" hurdles for a boy who is forced to spend summer vacation on the reservation with his Navajo grandfather herding sheep and learning the meanings of Navajo traditions.
Karen's stories usually include a historical or cultural backdrop to the challenges and changes her young characters face, how those changes impact their lives, and ultimately, how they learn to deal with them. In addition to this series, Karen is revising her first Young Adult novel, which is set in Amsterdam during German occupation.
Now retired from a career in property management, Karen is "doubling down" on the writing she loves and volunteers for NM Dachshund Rescue, sharing her Albuquerque, New Mexico, home with her latest rescued doxies.
