Dr. Suzanne Covich, a poet, short story writer, public speaker, Human Rights activist and the first Australian teacher to win two National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEITA), has been widely published in Australian literary journals, including Quadrant, Meanjin, Island, Southern Review and Northern Perspective. A recent winner of the Gold Coast Adult Writers prize for poetry, she is currently working with Fremantle Press to prepare her memoir for publication. When We Remember They Call Us Liars, her story of being silenced and isolated as she grew within a violent home, is one that she hopes will affirm those who've lived similar childhoods and challenge narrow perceptions of such lives as it also opens the way for others to speak. While she waits, she continues to write about issues that have always concerned her—the violations of women and children confronted with systemic and/or domestic violence. Entering university in her mid thirties after finishing school at twelve years of age and, coming from what she calls, "the other side of the track", she takes pride in her writing and academic achievements, and refuses to maintain the silences that involve children who are violated within their homes.
