24 Hours - A Mother’s Collection of Haikus
1 PMTasteless chicken cubes.
Yellow, thin, salty liquid.
"Where is letter P?"
2 PM
Dozing with Teddy,
Nana's quilt tucked under chin.
Pray dog does not bark.
3 PM
Try a hand at crafts;
Up to elbows in Play-Doh.
Not in baby's nose!
4 PM
Sweet dog needs relief.
Open door to let her out.
Ouch! Stepped on Lego!
5 PM
Shirt smells of spit-up,
Kids breathe fresh air outside,
Take aspirin. Sit. Stare.
6 PM
Frozen peas, spilt milk.
Kraft macaroni and cheese,
Fine dining—Amen.
7 PM
Teeth brushed, in PJ's,
Book selection Goodnight Moon—
It's all we ever read.
8 PM
Water, check. Blankie, check.
We are safety down the hall.
Watch out for monsters!
9 PM
Goodnight. Go to bed.
No more water, no more books, no more...
Sleeping pills, anyone?
10 PM
Ahh, all is quiet.
Laundry? dishes?... Tomorrow.
Did I brush my teeth?
11 PM
Football on T.V.
Pillow can't block out the drone.
Should I tackle you?
12 AM
Baseball stats, football,
ESPN set to repeat.
Enough already!
1 AM
Snores: loud, bothersome.
Roll you over, does not stop.
Really, it's the dog?
2 AM
I stir and awake.
Might as well pee, I have to.
Ouch, didn't see the wall!
3 AM
"Mommy, I need you!"
A call from far, down the hall,
"I peed in my bed!"
4 AM
Rock you back to sleep.
I can't sleep, my choices are...
Read or watch TV.
5 AM
A classic movie.
Bogart, Bacall. Play it Sam!
Often there is junk.
6 AM
The alarm goes off.
I hear you in the shower.
I give up on sleep.
7 AM
Don't talk to me yet!
Oatmeal, toast, juice. Pack lunches.
Strong coffee: caffeine.
8 AM
Go upstairs. Get dressed.
No—pants before socks and shoes.
Tags go in the back.
9 AM
Into the car seats.
Gas now costs four dollars. Ouch!
To the grocery store.
10 AM
Stop at the playground.
Run around, slide. Swing. Jump. Yell.
More kids. Tag, you're it!
11 AM
At the grocery store.
Candy? No, not that today.
Milk, eggs, wine, yogurt.
12 PM
Unpack the groceries.
Sort laundry: dark and white clothes.
Thirteen unmatched socks???
1 PM
Small bits of carrot,
Float with letters A to Z.
My toddler spells S-H-I-T.
