Joel Long's book Winged Insects (1999) was chosen by Jane Hirshfield as winner of the White Pine Press Poetry Prize and was a finalist for the Mountains and Plains Booksellers Award. His poems have appeared in Bellingham Review, Poet Lore, Sou'wester, Seattle Review, Willow Springs, Prairie Schooner, Northern Lights, Sonora Review, Poem, Midwest Quarterly, Talking River Review, Wisconsin Review, Mid-American Review, The Sun: a Magazine of Ideas, The Chattahoochee Review, Nightsun and Cape Rock among others. Long has poems forthcoming in Weber Studies and Valaparaiso Review. His poems have appeared in the anthologies American Poetry: The Next Generation, Fresh Water and Essential Love. His essays have appeared in Colorado-North Review and Alkali Flats as well as in an anthology forthcoming from University of Georgia Press. Long teaches creative writing and art history at Copper Hills High School in West Jordan, Utah. He developed the annual Lake Effect Writers Conference for high school writers. In 2001, he received the Educator of Excellence award from Writers at Work. Long lives in Salt Lake City with his daughters Hannah and Sarah.
