L. Sue Baugh
L. Sue Baugh grew up in rural Illinois, surrounded by woodlands and prairie. There she found her theme of our deep connection to nature in its many dimensions. As that open land began to disappear under development, Ms. Baugh decided to find landscapes that most resembled Earth long before we humans arose. In early 2001, she conceived of the ancient rocks project, as depicted in Echoes of Earth.
Over the next three years, Ms. Baugh traveled with her colleague, Lynn Martinelli, nearly 54,000 miles by air, float plane, river raft, fishing boat, and camper car to remote sites in Western Australia, Greenland, the Grand Canyon, and Northwest Territories in Canada.
Since self-publishing Echoes of Earth in 2012, Ms. Baugh has given talks around the country about her journeys and continues to work as a writer and editor in the publishing industry. She graduated from the University of Iowa's writing program and earned her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, NC. She has also finished writing an epic science fiction novel and helps other writers finish their projects. Her interests include astrology, medieval alchemy, tai chi/qi gong, and "hanging out with friends in cafes, talking about everything we can imagine."
This North Street Book Prize is dedicated to her travel partner, Lynn Martinelli, who died of ALS in 2019. Ms. Baugh says, "I will miss her forever."
