Willie Morris Award for Southern Fiction
Deadline April 30 (must be received by this date), formerly February 28. Highly recommended free contest offers $10,000 and expenses-paid trip to Oxford, Mississippi for the author of a novel, 50,000 words minimum, published in the previous calendar year and set in one of the original 11 states of the Confederacy: AL, AK, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, TX, or VA. The book "may contain violence and despair, and feature terrible events, but in the final analysis must be uplifting, and suggest hope and optimism." Judges are also looking for authenticity of setting, voice, and historical period. Publisher, editor, or author should submit registration form online and then send one copy to prize sponsor.
