Beginning her career in the early New York Village music scene, Irene Young's career as a photographer has spanned five decades. She has photographed musicians for more than 600 CD covers, and has produced thousands of promotional photos.
Young's photographs have appeared worldwide including Us Magazine, Oprah Magazine, The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, People Magazine, Rolling Stone, Guitar Player, and The Utne Reader. Her clients have included Warner Brothers, Columbia, Motown, Windham Hill, Narada, Virgin, Rounder, Olivia, Redwood, Harper Collins, Fawcett, Doubleday, Henry Holt & Company Publishers, and countless others.
Within her vast catalog of artists in Women's Music, Folk, Jazz, New Age, Bluegrass, Roots Music, and other art genres, her subjects have included well-known artists such as Holly Near, Cris Williamson, Alive!, Deidre McCalla, Teresa Trull, Barbara Higbie, Laura Nyro, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, Laurie Lewis, Darol Anger, Jethro Burns, Dana Goldberg, Kate Clinton, Marga Gomez, Skip The Needle, Linda Tillery, Mary Watkins, Ellen Bass, Eileen Myles, Jewelle Gomez, Sonia Braga, Rosario Dawson, Suzanne Vega, Lucy Kaplansky, Shawn Colvin, Judy Collins, Michael Hedges, Will Ackerman, Al Jarreau, Tom Paxton, George Thorogood, The Roches, XTC, Mary Black, and countless others.
Something About The Women: Five Decades of Seeing by Irene Young is her first retrospective book. She is currently working on her second book, The Extra Mile, which will include both men and women.
Young is of Greek heritage, spent her formative years in The South, lived in NYC for 16 years, and currently resides in Northern California.
