Paul McMahon is from Belfast, but is currently living in Sligo on the west coast of Ireland. He holds an MA in Writing, with first class honours, from NUI, Galway.
His poetry has been widely published in journals such as The Threepenny Review, The Salt Anthology of New Writing, The Montreal International Poetry Prize Global Anthology, The Moth, The Irish Independent, Southword, and The Poetry Saltzburg Review.
His prizes for poetry include:
1st prize in The Ballymaloe International Poetry Prize (2012), 1st prize in The Nottingham Poetry Open Competition (2012), 1st prize in The Westport Arts Festival Poetry competition (2012), 1st prize in The Golden Pen Poetry Prize (2011), 2nd prize in The Basil Bunting Poetry Award (2012), 2nd prize in The International Salt Prize for Poetry (2013), 2nd Prize in The West Coast Eisteddfod Poetry Competition (2012), 3rd prize in The Dromineer Poetry Prize (2011), 3rd prize in The Aquillrelle Poetry Prize (2013), and numerous short-listings including The Montreal International Poetry Prize (2013) and The Bridport Poetry Prize (2011).
He was awarded a Literature Bursary for poetry from The Arts Council of Ireland (2013) and he has been selected for the Poetry Ireland Introductions Series (2014).
He is currently a finalist in the New Directions Playwriting Prize in the UK.
