Ode
By Luci Shaw
The stillness of last night's dew, falling,
The ripeness of a perfect peach,
The coupled sound of two loons, calling,
My friends' connections, each to each.
The thorny rose's sharp perfection,
Forgiveness offered to a foe,
The firmness of a son's connection
Though seasons come and seasons go.
A violent thunderstorm retreating,
A candle's flame, however brief,
The sudden joy of kindred meeting,
Or autumn's colors, leaf by leaf.
The promise of a friend's arrival
To share a meal and dream a dream,
To work together for revival
Of some beloved, forgotten scheme.
Life's rhythmic pulse forever thrumming
in tune with love's eternal song.
Forgive me, if you hear me humming
for joy that you and I belong.
