In this 2025 article at the watchdog site Writer Beware, editor Victoria Strauss gives examples of a trending book-marketing scam. Authors receive solicitations from book clubs that either do not exist, or are being impersonated by the message sender. Real invitations to speak at book clubs should not charge a fee, whereas these fakes include requests for "spotlight packages" or "participation fees" that direct the author to an overseas payment-processing site.
